Florida Atlantic University began to repair its image two weeks ago, when former President Mary Jane Saunders resigned. Another step back to credibility would be to renew the contract of Deandre Poole, the instructor at the center of one of the controversies FAU mishandled so badly under Dr. Saunders.
Mr. Poole, who teaches in the School of Communication & Multimedia Studies, has been on administrative leave — supposedly for safety reasons — since March. He had received hate mail and death threats in response to a classroom exercise in which he asked students to step on papers with J-E-S-U-S written on them. The exercise, from an intercultural communications textbook, is designed to teach the power of words and symbols.
