The Palm Beach County School District has stumbled to a barely acceptable resolution of the Ernest Brown case. The Suncoast High School band director who misused school funds to take family members overseas will be suspended for 10 days without pay and undergo training in ethics and proper handling of school finances.
The district would have been justified in firing him. That was the recommendation last May when Mr. Brown was under indictment. The district dithered, with board member Debra Robinson the worst obstructionist. At Wednesday’s meeting the district implied that it had delayed at the request of prosecutors. In fact, last fall the interim state attorney lambasted the board for failing to act. In February, after a new state attorney took office, prosecutors dropped all charges.
