To find a new president, Florida Atlantic University will use a different search team than the one that produced Mary Jane Saunders, who in May was forced out of office into a teaching position. Also demoted was Provost Brenda Claiborne, whom the same headhunters had found. Trustee Jeffrey Feingold complained that the firm had given FAU “losers.”
In fact, Dr. Saunders did botch the administration’s response to criticism of the stadium rights naming deal with The GEO Group. Mr. Feingold and the rest of the board, however, approved that $6 million deal without vetting GEO. The trustees also defended Dr. Saunders right up until the time she announced her resignation. Mr. Feingold warned that student protests could lead to violence like the Boston Marathon bombing.
No trustee resigned over the GEO deal. Are Drs. Saunders and Claiborne the only “losers?”
