Florida Education Commissioner Tony Bennett and members of the state Board of Education know that school grades are a hoax. In a special meeting Tuesday, they had to decide which version of the hoax to foist on the public.
They could pretend that the quality of education in Florida plummeted during the last school year, dragging grades to catastrophic lows. Or, they could pretend that a clumsy, artificial readjustment of the grading formula would be fairer and more valid.
