Palm Beach County commissioners agreed this week to pony up nearly $700,000 in extra cash next year to triage the ailing budget of the county’s Office of Inspector General. This was a necessary step to maintain the government watchdog agency’s vitality, given that a lawsuit by 14 cities has prevented any cities from paying their share of the agency’s budget.
Commissioners deserve credit for stepping in to ensure that Inspector General Sheryl Steckler did not have to fire any of her staff. She had warned commissioners that, without the extra money, nine layoffs were likely. This would have been a tremendous blow to the county’s ethics reform efforts.
