No update on condition of child who fell from Oktoberfest ride

American German Club President Kurt Freiter said he is still waiting for an update on the condition of a child who fell 10 to 15 feet from a swing ride Saturday night at the annual Oktoberfest celebration in Lantana.

“It was an unfortunate accident,” Freiter said Monday. “I’m hoping the child is doing better and that everything is OK.”

Freiter did not witness the accident.

One club volunteer, who didn’t want her name used and who also didn’t witness the accident, was a little shaken up by what happened.

“I feel terrible,” she said. “This is such a fun, happy place. It’s awful.”

Freiter said all of the rides, including the swing involved in the incident, were inspected by the Bureau of Fair Ride Inspection, part of the Florida Department of Agriculture.

“We have nothing to do with the inspections,” Freiter said. “If the state signs off on the rides, there’s nothing for us to do.”

The child, who is reported to be of pre-school age, was transported by helicopter to a local trauma center around 10:30 p.m. Saturday, according to Capt. Albert Borroto, public information officer for Palm Beach County Fire Rescue.

No further information was available about the condition of the child from law enforcement.

The annual Oktoberfest, in its 43rd year, is a two-weekend celebration of German heritage that features food, beer, entertainment and themed activities
