The gunman in the Pulse nightclub shooting demanded that negotiators tell the United States “to stop bombing Syria and Iraq,” the Orlando Sentinel reported Friday from transcripts of 911 calls that were made public.
“They are killing a lot of innocent people,” Omar Mateen, the Fort Pierce native who killed 49 people and seriously injured 53 others in the early hours of June 12. It was the worst mass shooting in U.S. history.
Mateen made his first call to negotiators at 2:35 a.m. It lasted nine minutes, the Sentinel reported. He confessed to the shooting and pledged his allegiance to “Abu Bakr al-Baghdadiof the Islamic State.”
Mateen responds by talking about a May air strike that killed Abu Wahid, the ‘military emir’ for ISIS.
“That’s what triggered it, OK?” Mateen said.
