The U.S. Senate began a floor fight on a controversial immigration overhaul bill Tuesday and the contentious issue elicited emotional endorsements and dire warnings on the first day of debate.
“The reason I’m passionate about this issue is that this thing is hurting America,” said Senator Marco Rubio, R-Florida, one of the authors of the bill, referring to illegal immigration. “The fact that we have 11 million people living here and we don’t know who they are, we don’t know where they are, they’re not paying taxes, they’re not incorporated into our economy. That’s hurting America. That’s not only bad for them, it’s really bad for our country.”
