The DeVos-Blum Family YMCA west of the city is undergoing a “refresh” that’ll include a new lobby area, preschool classroom, outdoor patio, cafe and performance training area.
It’s the most work to be done at the 67,000-square-foot space since it opened, said Executive Director Barry Davis.

The changes should be completed in the first week of December in time for the building’s 16th year. The building will get new flooring and white walls, a self-serve cafe with a lounge area, green awnings outside, a patio with cafe tables and a lounge area at the outside entrance-way.
“They don’t have to necessarily come to the Y to workout,” Davis said. “They can hang out.”
The changes are part of a 10-year plan to boost membership and remind residents of the Y’s offerings.
As part of that, members and nonmembers are invited to come to the facility, and the one west of Boca at 6631 Palmetto Circle S., through Sunday and pick up a “passport.” The visitors are encouraged to complete at least 10 tasks in the passport around the facilities to get to know what is offered at the Y, and to be in the running to win a lifetime membership.
