A new summer internship program offered by the village will give high school and college students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in their field of study.
The program was created this year by the council in an effort to provide a career-related learning experience and on-the-job training for local students while meeting the organizational needs of the village.
“It’s a short-term commitment for high school and college students to work here at the village,” Village Clerk Lori McWilliams said of the program, which is unpaid. “It’s going to give them an opportunity to gain experience and exposure to fields they might be interested in.”
Internships are available in five departments: Administration, Human Resources, Information Technology, Police and Village Clerk.
Administration interns will assist the village manager, mayor and council with routine administrative duties and responsibilities. Human resources interns also will assist with routine administrative duties while learning what it takes to hire an employee and keep that employee safe on the job, McWilliams said.
Information technology interns assist with basic to intermediate-level IT tasks, including installation, basic troubleshooting, inventory, diagramming and system maintenance. A working knowledge of Microsoft Windows desktop server platforms is needed.
Police interns will perform routine administrative duties while also learning about the operations of a police agency. Village clerk interns will answer office phones and participate in meeting setup, agenda preparation and distribution, and creation of online fill-in forms using Adobe LiveCycle.
“There are so many people who ask what I do,” McWilliams said of her village clerk’s role. “This will teach them what it takes to create the agenda that goes to council and the process. There’s more to it than just grabbing a piece of paper and putting it down.”
Interested participants can submit resumes to the village’s human resources department at 345 Tequesta Drive, by fax to 561-768-0697 or by email to firstname.lastname@example.org. There is no application deadline or residency requirement. Start and end dates will be dependent on the school’s requirement or the student’s request.
