The Jupiter United U15 girls travel soccer team won the 2013 Florida Presidents Cup championship in Auburndale. The competition was held April 6-7 at the Lake Myrtle Complex. Jupiter defeated FC Dallas Emerald Coast 5-1 in the semifinals and the Central Brevard Cyclones 2-1 on penalty kicks in the championship game. Jupiter advances to the Region III Presidents Cup in Decatur, Ala., June 6-9. Optional athletes from Gym Like This! traveled to Kissimmee to compete in their respective state championships March 22-24 and April 5-7. Xcel-Open gymnast Tori Giol, of Jupiter, was named the all-around state champion. She also brought home gold medals on vault and bars. The Xcel-Open team placed fifth in the team competition. Kelly Schmitt, of Palm Beach Gardens, was awarded the state title on floor. Nyah Lazo, of Palm Beach Gardens, won a bronze medal on bars. In the Xcel-Novice division, Amanda Harper, of Palm Beach Gardens, claimed the silver medal on floor and fourth place all-around. Allison Weinstock, of North Palm Beach, took home fifth place on floor. Julia Bohne, of Palm Beach Gardens, finished fifth on beam. Palm Beach Gardens resident and Level 7 gymnast Lauren Bianchi was awarded a bronze medal on bars and fourth place all-around. In Level 8, Chanya Earle, of Riviera Beach, won the state title on bars and a silver medal in the all-around. Emma Slinkman, of Tequesta, claimed the bronze medal on beam. Maddie Staniszewski, of Jupiter, placed fifth on beam. All three athletes will represent GLT! in the upcoming Regional Championships in Atlanta. Ashley Felegi, a Level 9 from West Palm Beach, brought home a silver medal on vault. Teammate Molly Packard, of North Palm Beach, finished fifth on vault. Both athletes, along with Level 10 gymnast Emory Gawlik, qualified to represent GLT! at the upcoming Regional Championships in Jackson, Miss.

The Palm Beach Zoo’s inaugural ‘Save the Tiger 5K’ will be held at 7:30 a.m. on May 11. The run, devoted to helping protect Malayan tigers from poachers and conserve their habitat, winds through Dreher Park and finishes inside the zoo at the Fountain Plaza. Four Malayan tiger are residents at the zoo including mom Berapi and her three offspring Jaya, Bunga and Penari. The certified and timed race coincides with the cubs’ second birthday and is open to runners of all ages. The 3rd Annual Caring Fore Cadets Charity Golf Tournament, hosted by the West Point Parent Club of the Palm Beaches and the Treasure Coast, will be held April 27 at PGA National Resort & Spa. The Treasure Coast Volleyball Club 15U girls volleyball team won first place in the 16U Gold Division at the Volleyfest of the Palm Beaches Volleyball Tournament in West Palm Beach. The competition was held April 6-7 at the Palm Beach County Convention Center. Sixteen Florida teams in the 16U age bracket competed at the USA Volleyball-sanctioned tournament. Treasure Coast defeated Jupiter Volleyball Club Elite 15 in the Gold Bracket 16U championship match 25-23, 25-18, finishing the competition with a perfect record. The Stuart Sailfish Regatta will be held Saturday and Sunday at the Stuart Causeway. Seventy-five teams of race boat owners and drivers are expected to participate in the event. The race is sanctioned by the American Power Boat Association (APBA) and will feature ten classes of inboards, outboards and new this year, the new P1 power-stock class. The International Federation of Fly Fishers, a conservation group, has announced that the Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge and Nature Center has been awarded a grant of $1,500 that will be matched with an additional grant of $500 from its Florida Council to assist in a local conservation project. The project will develop a model curriculum and teach a two-day, hands-on conservation ethics clinic on May 11 and 18 for young fly fishers (ages 10-17). Students will gain an understanding of natural systems ecology and conservation in the outdoor setting of the diverse aquatic resources at Hobe Sound National Wildlife Refuge.
