An Illinois dredge company that spewed large rocks on a local beach it was supposed to be powdering with sand and is suspected of damaging a popular coral reef on its way to another local project, is fixing both.
Great Lakes Dredge & Dock, the largest dredge company in the U.S., is sifting a half-mile stretch of beach it renourished at the north end of Palm Beach in February, when its powerful dredge blew out filtering grates and spewed rocks. Meanwhile, offshore two miles to the south, the same company is repairing damage to the Flower Gardens Reef, allegedly damaged when cables pulling the same dredge to another renourishment project are believed to have slackened and sliced through corals and sponges.
