Delray Beach has been named one of the seven best restored beaches in 2013 by a national coastal advocacy group.
Delray Beach was included in the list along with Long Beach, Conn.; Sargent Beach, Texas; Nags Head Beach, N.C.; Edgartown, Martha’s Vineyard, Mass.; Pelican Island, La.; and Venice Beach, Calif., announced by the American Shore and Beach Preservation Association (ASBPA).
Judging was based on three criteria: the economic and ecological benefits the beach brings to its community; the short- and long-term success of the restoration project; and the challenges each community overcame during the course of the project.
For Delray Beach, the judges cited the widening of the beach and storm protection for the upland roads and buildings. The beach’s environmental habitat for nesting sea turtles and shorebirds was also recognized.
To enter the competition, coastal communities nominated their projects and an independent panel of coastal managers and scientists selected the winners.
