Services are set for Tuesday for Delano William “Bill” Mathis, who held several staff and elected positions in both Belle Glade and Ocean Ridge.
Mathis died at 79 on Saturday.
Mathis spent 31 years with Belle Glade police, and was chief from 1978 to 1987.
Three weeks after leaving the post, Mathis was named Belle Glade city manager. He served for three years.
Mathis was hired as Ocean Ridge Town Manager in 1993 and held that post for three years.
In 1997, he switched from the administrative offices to the dais, making a successful run for Belle Glade City Commission. He’d serve five years, three of those as mayor.
Mathis survived open-heart surgery in December 2001, then was unseated in a March 2002 election.
In June 2004, Mathis was called back from retirement in North Carolina to serve as Ocean Ridge’s interim town manager for about two years. He was called back a second time as an interim in the summer of 2008.
“He loved government work. He really did,” wife Barbara “Bobbie” Mathis said. “He loved public service.”
Mr. Mathis is survived by his wife; daughter Pam Penta of California; son Richard Mathis of Port St. Lucie; and stepsons Steve Wilson of Loxahatchee and Tommy Wilson of Dallas.
Services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Belle Glade Community United Methodist Church, 401 S.W. 1 St., with entombment at Foreverglades Cemetery, 1500 Gator Blvd., Belle Glade.
