A politically divided city commission might break precedent and bypass the person next-in-line to serve as commission president, turning Thursday’s otherwise mundane swearing-in ceremony into a heated debate.
Sylvia Moffett, the only commissioner to align with Mayor Jeri Muoio on some issues putting her on the losing end of 4-1 votes, would become the commission president Thursday if the board keeps to its usual rotation order. The commission president chairs the city’s audit committee, serves as temporary mayor if the mayor dies or leaves office early, and he or she runs meetings if the mayor is unavailable.
