Dozens of residents urged the city council Thursday to drop plans for a 117-acre spring training complex near PGA and Central boulevards, saying it would destroy their neighborhoods’ tranquility, endanger schoolchildren and threaten the city’s reputation.
Repeatedly, residents, most wearing red shirts, approached the microphone to get council members on the record: “Are you for or against the stadium?” Roughly 200 residents attended the 7 p.m. meeting in city hall, which was at times collegial but frequently erupted in barbs being called out at council members.
