West Palm Beach city commissioners Monday approved a $140,000 settlement in a police beating case, but not before heated discussion about the amount of the payoff and whether the city is doing enough to avert future incidents.
The vote was 4-1, with Kimberly Mitchell opposed. She said she’d been blindsided when she saw a weekend Palm Beach Post story on the incident. She got the settlement removed from the commission’s consent agenda, to initiate discussion, but failed to convince colleagues to table it until she could learn more.
