Three Greenacres residents were arrested this week in connection with a retail theft ring that included Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade counties.
James H. Chick Jr., 27, and Kimberly N. Chick, 24, both of Greenacres were booked into the Palm Beach County Jail on charges of retail theft. Gary W. Sheerer Jr., 31, also of Greenacres was booked into the jail on the same charge. All three defendants were booked into the jail Friday.
The three were part of eight arrests which stemmed from an investigation which began in April 2012. The eight defendants allegedly targeted pharmacies around South Florida including Walgreens, CVS, Winn Dixie and Publix. Authorities say they stole about $100,000 in over-the-counter items such as Oil of Olay products, Advil, Aleve, Rogaine and Zantac and then sold the items.
On April 11, James and Kimberly Chick and Sheerer were seen at the Publix located at 5970 S. Jog Road in suburban Lake Worth, stealing over-the-counter medications. The three left that Publix without paying $630.23 for the products. They then traveled to the CVS located on North Military Trail in Palm Beach Gardens, where officers say they saw the three attempt to leave that pharmacy with stolen products, according to a Florida Department of Law Enforcement probable-cause affidavit.
The investigation started when the retailers noticed an increase in theft of those types of products.
Involved in the investigation, among many others, were the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations, the Broward Sheriff’s office and Aventura Police.
Authorities said organized retail crimes investigations from within the pharmacies provided assistance to law enforcement.
“Organized retail theft is a $30 billion industry nationally, and it costs both businesses and consumers,” Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a statement.
