Maria’s abusive boyfriend watched her every move, keeping her a virtual prisoner except for her prenatal visits to a Palm Beach County health clinic, the only place where she was allowed to go without him.
It was there, Legal Aid Society Executive Director Robert Bertisch told a crowd Tuesday, that a doctor noticed some bruises on the woman’s arm. Because a Legal Aid Society worker was available at the clinic for cases like these, Bertisch said, they were able to quickly get her food, shelter and a restraining order against her abuser.

DOMESTIC VIOLENCE AWARENESS
Following is a list of Palm Beach County events to help raise awareness:
Sept. 7- Oct. 5 (10 a.m.- 5 p.m.) — “Our Eyes, Our World Art Exhibit” at the Cultural Council of Palm Beach County at 601 Lake Ave., Lake Worth
Art exhibit displays art work created by children from the HomeSafe SafetyNet program. The children are victims of domestic violence.
Oct. 1-3 — “Shine the Light on Domestic Violence” at the Jupiter Lighthouse
The lighthouse will be lit with purple lights from Tuesday through Thursday. Purple is the color for domestic violence awareness.
Oct. 3 — Candlelight Vigil at the Jupiter Lighthouse at 500 Captain Armour’s Way
A candlelight vigil will honor victims and survivors of domestic violence
Oct. 4 and Oct. 18 (6 p.m.- 10 p.m.) — “Evening On the Avenue” Lake Worth
Lake Worth is lighting the plaza, at 15 N. M St., purple.
Oct. 10 — Domestic Violence Safety Planning for Victims with Disabilities (2 p.m. - 4 p.m.) at 6800 Forest Hill Blvd.
Training provided by a victim advocate
Oct. 11 — Wear Purple Day
Wear purple in honor of domestic violence awareness.
Oct. 12 — Race for Hope 5K, 10K or Kids’ Dash at Anchor Park in Delray Beach

Jennifer Rey from AVDA speaks to students. Cosmetology program students will offer purple hair extensions for $2 to raise money to give to the son of a classmate who was killed due to domestic violence.
Oct. 16 — “Start with the Y” breakfast series at the Airport Hilton at 150 Australian Ave., West Palm Beach
Naomi Ackerman — actress educator and activist — is a guest speaker. Her topic: “Flowers aren’t enough.”
