The parents of a mentally ill 9-year-old boy have sued West Palm Hospital, claiming he was sexually assaulted by a counselor at the facility’s well-known pediatric psychiatric unit when they brought him there in May for treatment.
Their attorney, Jeff Herman, on Monday blasted the 45th Street hospital, formerly known as Columbia Hospital, for hiring the counselor, Dan Furio. He had been arrested in 2005 by a police officer who claimed he caught Furio masturbating in John Prince Park in Lake Worth. That the charge was ultimately dismissed by the Palm Beach County State Attorney’s Office is irrelevant, Herman said.
