Memorial set for Saturday for boy killed in West Palm hit-and-run

A gathering will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Tillman Funeral Home & Crematory on South Military Trail near West Palm Beach. A memorial service is scheduled to start at the funeral home after the gathering, Isaiah’s family said.

Isaiah was walking home with a friend at about 9:30 p.m. Nov. 4 when he was hit and thrown by a gray or light blue-colored Toyota Corolla in the crosswalk at the intersection of Military Trail and Cherry Road just west of the city limits, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said.

He sustained inoperable brain damage, his family said.

In its initial report, the sheriff’s office said it was unclear whether the boys or the car had the right of way. Isaiah’s family said the driver had run a red light.

No one has been charged in Isaiah’s death, which has been ruled a homicide. The sheriff’s office said Tuesday it is pursuing “a few leads” in the case. Anyone with information is asked to contact sheriff’s office Investigator Sean Ramsey at 561-681-4540.

Renaissance Charter School at West Palm Beach, where Isaiah was in the seventh grade, raised more than $1,400 for his medical expenses, Isaiah’s family said. About two weeks ago, Isaiah’s classmates paid $2 to dress down — students usually wear uniforms — in his favorite color, orange.

In a letter to students, Renaissance Charter School Principal Michael Lupton wrote: “He was an amazing young man who made us all laugh and enjoy life. As we think back on our time with him, it is important to remember and focus on the positives that he brought into our lives.”

Lupton added that the school would provide additional counselors and staff to students who need special attention.

A GoFundMe page set up online for Isaiah’s medical expenses raised more than $5,500 from 90 people in the 20 days it has been active.
