Two juveniles were arrested on Oct. 28 after they broke into a Delray Beach police car and stole the officer’s gun and laptop computer, records show.
Police were called to 2115 Spring Harbor Drive after witnesses saw the two boys breaking into a police car. The teenagers ran away before authorities arrived but police caught up with the juveniles in the area of Linton Boulevard and Congress Avenue.
When an officer approached, the two boys ran off in different directions, according to a probable cause affidavit.
Officers caught up with Cristino John Madigan, a 10th grader at Forest Hill High School, and found him with a pair of pliers in his pants pocket.
Madigan, 16, is being charged as an adult. Madigan faces charges of grand theft, committing a first-degree felony with a stolen law enforcement weapon and two counts of resisting arrest without violence. He is being held at the Palm Beach County Jail in lieu of $3,000 bail.
The second juvenile, 17, was tracked down by a police dog hiding beneath a vehicle parked in a private home. The Palm Beach Post is not identifying the boy because he has not been charged as an adult.
While the 17-year-old was being arrested, he kicked and punched at officers and the police dog named Benny, according to the affidavit. The juvenile was in possession of a Glock handgun, which was determined to be stolen from the police car.
Witnesses said they saw Madigan in the police car’s driver’s seat while the 17-year-old “hovered over him.”
The stolen laptop computer and a gun holster were found 50 to 75 feet from the burglarized police car, the affidavit states.
During an interview, Madigan told police he and the 17-year-old were hanging around a Delray Beach gas station when they decided to break into cars. Madigan said he acted as a lookout while the other juvenile broke into the police car.
The affidavit says the 17-year-old was transported to the Delray Beach Medical Center, but does not say if the boy was injured. The boy refused to speak with police.
Records show that the 17-year-old has 12 arrests on his record. He was arrested for the first time at age 13 for burglary.
