There was a hint of incredulity in Circuit Judge Karen Miller’s voice Friday when she repeated Camille Brown’s claims that an undercover investigator had lured her into a $3 million extortion plot against the former owners of the Claire’s Stores empire.
Brown sounded, in Miller’s opinion, rather assertive and matter-of-fact in her negotiations aimed at trading the money for a series of letters exposing the darkest family secrets of Rowland and Sylvia Schaefer, letters Brown threatened to hand over to the highest-bidding media outlet in an email to the couple’s daughter Bonnie Schaefer after Brown’s mother was unceremoniously fired as the elderly couple’s caregiver.
