In a bizarre turn of events, a federal judge today delayed the sentencing of a former lawyer who admitted he masterminded a plot to kidnap a wealthy Ballen Isles resident, allowed him to fire his attorney and agreed to appoint a new lawyer to represent him.
U.S. District Judge Daniel Hurley said he was initially suspicious about Michael Melillo’s claims that his relationship with his attorney had deteriorated so badly that he no longer believed he would receive justice. But, after clearing the courtroom for more than 30 minutes, while he talked privately to Melillo and his attorney, Anthony Iacullo, Hurley said he was convinced it wasn’t a ruse.
