A 21-year-old man is in the county jail today after authorities say he caused a car crash, sending two to the hospital. It appeared the man drank six Corona beers before the crash.
Enguido G. Lopez, who has no listed permanent address, faces charges of DUI, hit and run, and operating a motor vehicle without a valid license.
Palm Beach County Sheriff’s deputies were called to the intersection of Lake Worth and Kirk roads Monday to investigate a car crash. Involved in the crash were a tan Toyota Camry and a yellow Chevy Colorado pickup truck. Witnesses reported to deputies that the Camry rear-ended the Chevy and the driver of the Camry, Lopez, tried fleeing from the scene.
The witnesses started chasing Lopez and one of them held him down until deputies arrived, a sheriff’s probable-cause affidavit says.
The driver and passenger of the Chevy complained of neck and back pains and were taken to a local hospital. The driver told deputies that they were stopped at a red light when the Camry rear-ended them at a high rate of speed.
Meanwhile, deputies interviewed Lopez, who was allegedly slurring his speech and swaying back and forth.
Lopez had an extreme odor of alcohol coming from him, the affidavit says.
Deputies then found an 18-pack of Corona Extra on the passenger floor board of the Camry. Six of the bottles were missing and were found lying next to the carton. Deputies believe Lopez drank those before the crash.
Lopez is being held in the county jail in lieu of $32,000 bail, records show.
