Village police said goodbye to four-legged officer Cole after the K9 died of complications from emergency surgery last week, the department said on Facebook.
Cole, badge #638, underwent surgery for an “unexpected medical event,” police said. He served the department for nine years with Officer James Kaminski.
The 9-year-old German shepherd died 9:30 p.m. Dec. 8.
Police use K9 officers to search for criminals, missing people and illegal drugs and to apprehend suspect and protect officers.
Their presence at a scene helps deter crime, according to the department.
