NEW: Wellington food drive feeds more than 200 families for Thanksgiving

More than 200 families will have Thanksgiving dinner thanks to Wellington and its residents.

The annual Hometown Holiday Food Drive -- a partnership between the village and the Wellington Interfaith Council -- will feed families ranging in size from two to 12 people, Wellington said in a news release

Each of the more than 200 bags included a gift card to purchase a ham or turkey, along with all of the traditional Thanksgiving dinner fixings, including vegetables and stuffing. Money to buy the gift cards was raised by Wellington’s faith-based groups, the Christopher Aguirre Foundation and the Mall at Wellington Green. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office helped distribute the meals.

In typical Thanksgiving fashion, there were leftovers: More than 900 cans of excess donated items were given to Wellington Cares and CROS Ministries, two nonprofits that will distribute the food throughout Palm Beach County, the news release said.

“We are extremely grateful for everyone’s assistance with this project. It is truly amazing to see the accomplishments a community can make when working together,” the village said in the news release.
