Lake Worth community to raise new American flag on Veterans Day

Residents in Willow Bend, a community west of Lake Worth, plan to raise a new American flag on Veterans Day.

“We’re going to raise it right on the property,” said Ruth Levin, 80. “We’re going to put it on a flagpole right in front of Clubhouse 1.”

The ceremony starts at 4 p.m.

While the flag will be raised outside, once that’s finished, the event moves indoors for a wine and cheese reception.

“It’s hot weather and difficult for everyone to stay outside so we changed the rest of the program inside,” said Levin, a resident since 1985. “We’ll introduce hero representatives, including those veterans who have gone on Honor Flight South Florida trips. So far, we have three.”

Residents also ordered a plaque which goes past honoring local veterans, Levin said.

“Instead of honoring just veterans, we’ll also honor heroes at sheriff’s department, fire department and local first responders,” Levin said. “They’ve all been invited.”

Gary Malloy, another Willow Bend resident, is a former New York City cop who was on active duty during the terrorist attacks on Sept, 11. Levin said Malloy is scheduled to speak.

“He’ll share whatever stories he has to tell,” she said.
