Lake Worth church celebrates, reflects on 90 years in business

Our Savior Lutheran, the church across the street from Lake Worth High School, recently celebrated its 90th anniversary as several former members and friends visited.

“There was lots of hugs, tears, smiles and warm embraces,” said Stephen Wipperman, church pastor. “It was delightful for everyone.”

The church was started in 1927 with about a group of 25 people. “We built a worship center that still stands today,” Wipperman said. “It really started to blossom and grow with the growth of the community and surrounding area.”

More than 25 years ago, the church has over 2,000 members. But as times changed and so many people move west, Wipperman said that number had dropped significantly.

“We now have about 350 members,” he said. “We were really very active, but through the years and as the population changed and people started moving, our congregation started to shrink in size.”

A few years ago, the church closed a school that in the 1960s had more than 500 students. “That school flourished for many years but we had to close it because of declining enrollment,” Wipperman said.

But Our Savior Lutheran continues to re-invent itself.

Wipperman said it is part of a homeless family network called Family Promised, a national organization made up of churches and religious organizations to help homeless families.

The church also has an after school tutoring program for local kids, a soccer program on Saturday mornings and an active group of quilters who meet weekly and who also support outreach work in Palm Beach County.

“That’s always a challenge for a church like ours,” Wipperman said.
