Rock music fans will perk up when they see what the 2018-19 Kravis on Broadway series has in store. Three of the seven musicals will feature rock scores: Rock of Ages, On Your Feet! and School of Rock The Musical.
Classic musical aficionados will warm to revivals of Hello, Dolly! and Les Miserables. Those inspired by girl power might find their hearts stirred by Waitress, while the 20 years and counting Broadway run of Disney’s The Lion King testifies to its family-friendly appeal.
Nov. 6-11:Rock of Ages — Set in the 1980s on Hollywood’s Sunset Strip, the musical tells the tale of young lovers while packing the stage with tunes by such bands as Styx, Poison, Twisted Sister and Whitesnake. The tour celebrates the 10th anniversary of the debut of the long-running Broadway production.
Dec. 11-16:Hello, Dolly! — The Broadway revival won four 2017 Tony Awards, including Best Musical Revival and Best Actress for its star, Bette Midler. Don’t expect Midler, but do expect tunes such as Before the Parade Passes By,It Only Takes a Moment and the title track.
Jan. 8-13, 2019:On Your Feet! — Pop music fans no doubt are familiar with the music of Miami’s own Gloria and Emilio Estefan, but they might not know much about their lives. The musical tells their story and delivers hits such as Conga, Get On Your Feet and Rhythm Is Gonna Get You.
Feb. 12-17, 2019:Les Miserables — It’s been more than 30 years since the heroic period musical made its bow on Broadway. Cameron Mackintosh dusted it off for Broadway in 2014 with a new production that features fresh staging and scenery. It’s now on the road for the show’s fourth national tour.
March 5-10, 2019:Waitress — Singer-songwriter Sara Bareilles (Brave, Love Song) wrote the music and lyrics for this musical based on the 2007 film about a woman seeking to escape a dead-end life and a loveless marriage by entering a baking contest.
March 27-31, 2019:School of Rock The Musical — Andrew Lloyd Webber returned in triumph to the Broadway stage with this musical. It’s based on the 2003 film about a wannabe rock star posing as a substitute teacher at a tony prep school who turns his fifth-grade class into a rock band headed for a Battle of the Bands competition.
April 24-May 5, 2019:Disney’s The Lion King — Believe it or not, this hit musical has never played the Kravis Center before. It’s known for its Elton John-Tim Rice score (Circle of Life, Hakuna Matata) and Julie Taymor’s vivid staging featuring puppets.
And here’s a teaser for 2019-20. The smash hit Hamilton will headline the season.
