The horse is back!
Yes, Jake, the large black horse that has sat in front of McLelland’s Saddlery on North Dixie Highway since the store opened in 1958, has returned.
“It’s no easy chore,” said Ted McLelland, store owner. “Getting it up there, getting it turned around, getting it bolted takes time — about an hour.”
So, what happened?
The horse was taken down the day before Hurricane Irma in September. McLelland said the owners always remove the horse, which sits on the store’s roof, during hurricane season.
“She could’ve blown away,” McLelland said. “Even when we take the horse down in July, we don’t put her back up until hurricane season is officially over.”
The season ended Nov. 30.
Now, Jake is back.
“He’s been with us since 1958,” McLelland said. “He used to be on the sidewalks in the old days.”
