An empty barge washed ashore Thursday morning on Ocean Reef Park’s beach, city police and U.S. Coast Guard officials said.
The barge was being towed and broke loose from the tugboat Na Hoku near the Lake Worth Inlet during a crew switch, U.S. Coast Guard spokesman Eric Woodall said. The Coast Guard was notified at about 5 a.m. that the barge beached on Singer Island.
It came ashore on the 3800 block of North Ocean Drive, police said.
The barge was empty when it broke loose. No one was injured nor is there any threat of pollution, Woodall said.
It is unclear where the barge was coming from or where it was headed toward.
The Coast Guard was at work Thursday morning to remove the barge from the beach, which remains open to the public.
