It’s a go: Boynton Beach to welcome first Aldi grocery store

Watch out Publix, Aldi is officially coming to Boynton Beach.

The store will open at 3452 W. Boynton Beach Blvd. at Knuth Road, but in that location it’s going to have some major competition. It’ll be near the Walmart at 3200 Old Boynton Road, the Publix at 133 N. Congress Ave. and BJ’s Wholesale Club at 1540 W. Boynton Beach Blvd.

Plus an Aldi is already under construction just west of Boynton at Military Trail and Hypoluxo Road.

The Aldi will be built on about two acres where a 30-year-old rundown office building sits. It’ll bring 20 jobs — 15 full time and five part time. Pay starts at about $12 per hour, a store representative said.

At Tuesday’s commission meeting, residents expressed both excitement and disappointment. The store has been welcomed in by all commissioners except Joe Casello.

Among the reasons Casello voted against the project: He thought their presentation was “weak,” and didn’t like that they were reluctant to agree to recommendations from the city’s planning and development advisory board regarding lighting and handicap parking spots.

The advisory board asked the store for warm white lighting instead of cool lighting. However Aldi did not agree to the change. Also, the board asked Aldi to provide more handicap spots than its planned four. After some discussion Aldi agreed to one more. The store will have five handicap spots and 85 standard parking spots.

“We’ll see how it works,” he said. He added he thinks a better location would have been in the Heart of Boynton near Martin Luther King Jr. and Seacrest boulevards, where officials have been trying to bring in a grocery store for years.

The commission previously had given approval for the site to be used as a day care for up to 200 children. Aldi representatives persuaded the property owner to build a grocery store instead, according to city documents.

Aldi has several Palm Beach County locations including Royal Palm Beach, Palm Springs, Lake Park, West Palm Beach, Delray Beach and Boca Raton.

The company also has a distribution center and regional headquarters at State Road 7 and Okeechobee Boulevard in Royal Palm Beach.
