Boynton Beach-area school continues to help out local soup kitchen

Students from Franklin Academy Charter School west of Boynton Beach spent Friday, National Sandwich Day, making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for The Soup Kitchen west of Boynton Beach.

This is the third year the students have held the event, but this year was a little different because they also held a drive for baby supplies, also to be given to the Soup Kitchen.

“We can’t believe how generous our Franklin families were,” said Sarah Principe, the school’s student council advisor.

The group made 621 sandwiches and gathered 98 baby-supply bags.

Franklin’s student council came up with the event three years ago to give back to their community. They formed a relationship with the Soup Kitchen, Principe said.

In addition to the students, their parents and teachers also participated in the sandwich making.

Last year the group made more than 2,000 sandwiches.

“It is such a humbling experience to see how our school of 1,300-plus students have come together to donate and also get their hands dirty to benefit the homelessness right in our own backyard!” Principe said.

The school is at 7882 S. Military Trail.
