Wellington Elementary School families enjoy book fair festivities


SEMINOLE RIDGE HIGH

Several TV Production Academy students competed at the Florida Scholastic Press Association District 7 Convention this month, placing in two of three on-the-spot broadcast journalism challenges. Melina Adue, Ana Fontecchio and Carly Swanson took the silver in the Live to Tape category. Jonathan Alvarez, Chloe Barcia and Danielle Leslie earned the bronze in the Broadcast Commentary challenge.

Army JROTC Hawk Battalion Raiders team took part in a regional meet recently, competing along with nine area schools in five events. The men’s team placed fourth in four events and third in one. The women’s team placed fourth in three events and second in two. Overall, the school came in fourth.

Choral students Freddy Caceres and Danielle Parks were chosen for Florida’s 2018 All-State choruses. Both will attend the Florida Music Association’s in-service conference in Tampa in January.

PALM BEACH MARITIME ACADEMY AND HIGH SCHOOL

Open house events for families interested in learning more about the school take place Dec. 9 from 10 a.m. to noon. Refreshments will be served, and there will be a raffle for an Amazon Echo Dot. The academy is a tuition-free, marine science-enriched charter school for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. The elementary school campus is at 1518 W. Lantana Road, Lantana. The middle-high school campus, 600 S. East Coast Ave., Lantana, will host a special presentation by the U.S. Naval Sea Cadets at the open house.

CARDINAL NEWMAN HIGH

The debate team finished with five ribbons at the recent Martin County High School Debate Tournament, earning four fourth-place and one sixth-place ribbons.

Tyler’s Light, a presentation about the opioid epidemic, is slated for 6 p.m. Nov. 30. The speaker is Wayne Campbell, whose son became addicted to painkillers following a sports injury and shoulder surgery. He later died of a heroin overdose. To attend, RSVP to tina.gerencser@cardinalnewman.com

A blood drive takes place from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 1.

The Christmas Concert begins at 7 p.m. Dec. 8 in the gymnasium.

BRIEFLY

Students in kindergarten through 12th grade are invited to participate in the Hanley Foundation ArtiGras Youth Art Competition. Students can submit artwork through their school’s art teacher until 5 p.m. Dec. 6. Entries will be narrowed down to 77 finalists, and the winners will be announced at noon on Feb. 17, the first day of Artigras. All finalists will have their works on display at the festival. Applications are being accepted for the more than 300 Choice Programs and Career Academies at 117 district schools. Parents can complete the online application at palmbeachschools.org/choiceprograms, or may download a hard copy in English, Creole, Portuguese or Spanish at palmbeachschools.org/choiceprograms/application/. The original application must be mailed or delivered to the Department of Choice and Career Options with a postmark no later than Jan. 26 for most Choice programs.

Performing arts programs, which require an audition score in addition to the eligibility criteria and have a Dec. 1 deadline application date, are: Bak Middle School of the Arts; The Conservatory School @ North Palm Beach, Music-Band, Music-Orchestral Strings and Music-Vocal for grades six to eight; Boynton Beach High Arts Program; and Alexander W. Dreyfoos Jr. School of the Arts.

The Choice and Career Academy lottery will be held the week of March 6, and applicants will receive the status of their application on March 31.
