PBC schools welcome dozens of student refugees from recent hurricanes

Already about 40 student hurricane refugees from Texas, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and even the Florida Keys have enrolled in Palm Beach County’s public schools, and more are expected, district officials said Wednesday.

Superintendent Robert Avossa told his boundary advisory committee Tuesday that he’s asked the state to delay its official enrollment count that was due to happen Oct. 13. The state doles out education money based on school enrollment, and without a delay the district could be caught having to cover the costs of educating students who arrive after the official count. Another head count is done in February.

The students that have arrived so far are spread throughout the district’s elementary, middle and high schools, with not concentration at any particular school, district officials report.

Meanwhile, Christ Fellowship was expected to deliver 150 donated back packs to the district’s welcome center on Forest Hill Boulevard Wednesday afternoon. The packs are filled with school supplies for the student transplants from homes devastated by hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria.
