Parent workshop on mood and anxiety disorders in teens tonight


An expert on depression, bipolar and other mood disorders in young people will talk at a workshop open to all parents and adults this evening at Park Vista High School. Dr. Karen Swartz of Johns Hopkins will cover topics including characteristics, symptoms, prevalence and treatment of these disorders that include depression and bipolar disorder, but several others as well.

Swartz was among the professionals at Johns Hopkins to create the Adolescent Depression Awareness Program. The ADAP program teaches the symptoms of depressive and bipolar illness and how to distinguish them from the normal ups and downs of adolescents, according to Hopkins’ website.

There will be time for questions and answers. Note that this program is not appropriate for children or adolescents.

The parent workshop is part of a partnership between the school district, Johns Hopkins and the Ryan Licht Sang Bipolar Foundation.
