St. John Paul II Academy students share spirit of Christmas with needy


SOUTHTECH PREPARATORY ACADEMY

An open house is planned at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 24 on the campus at 1325 Gateway Blvd., Boynton Beach. The tuition-free charter school serves students in grades six through eight. School staff will be on hand to provide information on academic and student support services, clubs and organizations. Admissions assistance also will be available. The school educates students in the STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) disciplines and through career academies. For more information, call 561-318-8087.

Debi Elfen, volunteer coordinator for the School District of Palm Beach County, was named the recipient of the 2017 Adele Graham Award for her efforts in promoting school volunteerism. The award was presented at the Florida Association of Partners in Education fall leadership conference in Orlando. Elfen received a commemorative trophy and a $500 monetary prize.

Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar’s Above and “BEE”yond Teacher Essay Contest will award one teacher from the School District of Palm Beach County a $500 sponsorship check to use in the classroom for the next school year, along with an end-of-year party for the current class. To nominate a teacher, students must submit an essay in person at their local Applebee’s explaining why their teacher deserves to be honored. Students who enter an essay will receive a free ice cream certificate to the restaurant. Submissions will be accepted at participating restaurants through March 31, and winners will be announced on April 23.
