He’s 6-foot-7 and 235 pounds — and he’s a giant among his classmates, too.
Alex Nusbickel, 18, is this year’s valedictorian at Boca Raton High School, plus he has the top weighted grade-point average of any Palm Beach County senior: 5.47.
Alex scored perfect 5’s on his first 11 AP exams and earned perfect 800’s on five SAT tests. He won first place for Academic Excellence in The Palm Beach Post’s Pathfinder High School Scholarship Awards.
He channeled his favorite movie character, Conan the Barbarian, and its star, Arnold Schwarzenegger, in his graduation speech: “Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength.”
Nusbickel is the only child of John and Wendi Nusbickel, two computer programmers who met locally at IBM.
“When Alex gets into something, he goes deep,” John Nusbickel said. “He started doing imitations at an early age.”
“The teachers at Boca High are really going to miss Alex and his sense of humor,” Wendi Nusbickel added. “When his math teacher called on ‘Arnold,’ that meant he wanted Alex to answer using his Arnold impersonation.”
“Arnold” tutored classmate Henry Bernal in math, and he says his proudest accomplishment was in helping Henry graduate.
Alex is heading to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he has a full academic scholarship and plans to become a doctor.
“Alex becoming a doctor has so much to do with his desire to help other people,” his mother said. “Alex is imposing because of his size, like Arnold Schwarzenegger, but he’s always funny and charming and concerned about others, too.”
