Charity Miles distance tracker motivates kids to get fit

Parents need to know that Charity Miles — Running & Walking Distance Tracker is a free mileage tracker app that donates money to charities based on the number of miles you walk, run, or bike. Users choose the charity they’ll be moving for during each session, based on a list of more than 40 well-known charities, such as the ASPCA, Stand Up to Cancer, World Wildlife Fund, Girls on the Run, and Special Olympics. Earn up to 10 cents per mile for biking and 25 cents per mile for walking or running. You can accumulate miles solo or with others — family, friends, coworkers — as part of a team. Money for the donations comes from the app’s corporate sponsors (including Humana and MasterCard). Note that the app tracks and collects your location and shares your email address with the charities you select. Though younger kids could use this app, it’s best to use an adult’s email address and for kids to use it with an adult. See the app’s privacy policy to read more about the types of information collected and shared.

WHAT’S IT ABOUT?

To get started with Charity Miles — Running & Walking Distance Tracker, sign up with Facebook or a personal email address. Enable location, motion detection, and notifications. Select a charity from the extensive list and start moving. The process of starting the app each time you walk, bike, or run is easy: Select a charity, select your activity, and begin to move. GPS tracking begins instantly. Tap “Stop” when your exercise is complete, and share via social media, if desired. Tap your profile to view total miles, sessions, and the charities you’ve funded. You can also set reminders for yourself.

IS IT ANY GOOD?

This app is a terrific tool for teens and adults to turn their fitness goals into community service as they earn donations for national charities. Charity Miles — Running & Walking Distance Tracker may inspire teens and adults to get moving, or it can give people already in motion a larger purpose to their fitness routines. Being able to choose charities from a long list of well-known, national nonprofit organizations and watching how far you’ve walked, how many sessions you’ve used in the app, and how much money has been raised for each group is really motivating. This app exemplifies the credo, “The best way to reach your goals is to help others reach theirs.”
