What: 1920s half-doll powder puff handle
Where: Patricia Vaillancourt Antique Dolls of Stuart, West Palm Beach Antiques Festival. On the web: www.dollsantique.com. Next show is July 5-7.
How much: $40
Why it’s special: Eighty-five years ago, this flapper’s head would have sat upon a dresser waiting to take the shine away from milady’s nose.
She belongs to a collecting category called half-dolls. Millions of these porcelain half-dolls were turned out in the early 20th century as toppers for pincushions and handles for brushes and powder puffs. Some looked like 18th-century ladies; others had more contemporary themes, like this figure, made in Germany around 1925.
She was thoroughly modern in her day, but now she surely makes a nod to another era.
