Why she loves it: When Geri Unger moved here from Long Island, N.Y., almost 20 years ago, life was a bit different. Her ex-husband was still her husband. Their kids were little. And she was leaving friends and family, trading in New York weather for Florida warmth.
Channing Villas, with its fresh paint and tidy lawns and pretty landscaping, felt right.
“Every time I drove in here, it looked nice,” she says now. “My husband at the time was being transferred, and I had two young children. I was looking for better schools.”
Wellington was perfect, and Channing Villas was “a nice little clean community,” she said.
A lot of things have changed, of course — including a recent spell of foreclosures in Channing Villas. But prices are headed back up — although you still can get a nice unit for well under $150,000 — and the neighborhood is regaining its former verve.
“It’s still pretty well kept,” she says.
Unger loves that she has a small backyard that’s easy to take care of. “I keep up an itty-bitty garden,” she says. She has grandkids now, and there’s just enough space for them to play. When her children were growing up, she loved that the neighborhood was designed around a circle, so the kids could run around without her having to worry.
And while she first rented in Channing Villas, she eventually found a landlord who owned seven units here. She bought one that had upgrades from the original 1970s features.
Plus, it’s nice to have a neighbor like Lottie Fasciani. (As time marches further and further along, they have each other’s backs.)
“It might not be quite as nice as it was back then, but I like it,” says Unger, the grandkids playing in the background.
