A visit to the newest green market in West Boca provides so many healthy choices that you don’t get the urge to take a nap after your all-day graze. It’s not from lack of samples either — the vendors are just as generous with their samples are they as with their smiles.
The West Boca Green Market, which launched June 2 at Olympic Heights Community High School, doesn’t just offer flowers, fresh produce and delicious baked goods. There’s a Lexus on display, a train that makes loops through the market, a petting zoo, a clown, and vendors selling purses, jewelry, handmade paper, Tupperware, sandals, and Avon. There’s not one but two places two buy olive oil. There’s a Paella Master and a man who will work on your spine. There’s gourmet muffins, gourmet cheese, gourmet cheesecake. And everywhere you go, there’s sugar-free, gluten-free and organic deliciousness.
As you eat your way through the market, look for the little orange tent and the empanadas sold underneath. Created by Monique Font Delacroix, or “The Empanada Lady,” the hand pies are made with organic ingredients, including free range chicken, grass fed beef and vegan dough.
“They are the Aston Martins of the empanadas,” Font Delacroix says.
Flavors range from traditional to exotic: Ham, cheese and pineapple. Spanish chorizo, sweet onions and mozzarella. Blue cheese and caramelized onions. Ham, cheese and hearts of palm. Spicy chicken. There are also dessert empanadas: Guava and cream cheese. Banana, rum, Nutella and nuts. Crème patisserie, dulce de leche, caramelized apples and nuts.
Font Delacroix is a fashion designer-turned-pastry chef who trained in Italy and France. She currently lives in Coconut Grove.
“My grandfather was a (Le) Cordon Bleu chef,” she says. “We have a very long tradition in food on both sides in our family.”
Font Delacroix, who sells her empanadas for $6 at farmers markets such as this one, has been perfecting her gorgeous confections for 14 years.
“We are so proud of our product,” she says. “We keep improving and improving to make them better.”
