A juice kingdom rises on Dixie Highway

Fact: I once organized a Sunday night burger club where we toured different burger joints around the county – we were so organized that we had sheets where we rated the restaurants on factors such as toppings. I bring this up to illustrate that I am far from a pure eater. I love hamburgers and fries and chocolate and cookies.

But I do like fresh juices and believe that a big glass of beet-carrot-apple or kale-parsley-apple-celery evens out the score just a bit for a few days of chocolate sampling and nights of wine drinking. I like fresh, simple food that’s easy to eat that tastes good when I’m not “working.”

And I really like The Kingdom of Juices, which opened up just a few blocks from my house in December. It sells fresh juices, smoothies, wraps and salads –wholesome, filling and delicious.

Barbara Macineiras opened the brightly lit, colorfully adorned shop right on Dixie Highway in West Palm Beach in part to feed her family good food.

“My children all the time wanted to eat at McDonald’s and it’s not healthy,” she said. “So now they come in all the time and [drink] smoothies.”

Even the pesto sauce she uses in wraps is made at the store and she only sells and uses fruits that are in season. Fruits and veggies sit out in the store — huge carrots beckon as you try and make up your mind.

And if juicing isn’t your thing, she also offers dessert type smoothies as well, such as the Peanut Moon made with peanut butter, banana, almond milk and chocolate. Current selections include passion fruit, guanabana, mango and blackberry, and green juices are very popular.

The Italian Wrap, made with chicken, (that homemade) pesto sauce, lettuce, tomato and mozzarella cheese, was too large for one meal – especially when paired with a passion fruit-mango smoothie. Both items cost just $7.99.

Small smoothies cost $3.50 for 12 ounces and $4.49 for 24 ounces. Juices are $3.25 for 12 ounces and go up to $4 for 24 ounces.

Originally from Cuba, Macineiras describes the interior like a rustic farm in her native island, with over-sized furniture and soft colors on the walls.

The Kingdom of Juices: 6611 S. Dixie Highway, West Palm Beach; 561-585-8084; open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The juice bar is closed Sunday.at
