Desirae Merritt, a Loxahatchee seventh grader who attends Western Pines Middle School (second place, girls):
“I wear skirts every day and have hair down past my hips. Immediately, I was picked out of the crowd and stared at: ‘Look at the little church girl.’ Mockery got the best of me. It wasn’t as bad as other people have to deal with, but it still hurt me. Sometimes it was not on purpose; other times, it was. Each insult added a new knife to my heart and I couldn’t stand it.”
