This whole event is going to the dogs!
And that’s the plan. The second annual Pooch Prom, a benefit for the Drug Abuse Treatment Association, takes place Saturday at Downtown at the Gardens. DATA provides programs for children, adolescents and families dealing with substance abuse and juvenile delinquency in Palm Beach, St. Lucie, Martin, Indian River and Okeechobee counties.
You’ll see dogs in tuxedos, dogs in tulle, dogs in sequins and ribbons and bows. One dog family will arrive in a custom-made car with a flat-screen TV. All will be ready for a tail-wagging time.
Chaired by King Charles Cavalier Spaniel Miss Mia, the prom has contests for cutest couple, most athletic, most likely to succeed, best dressed, best spirit, most talented and smartest dog. Of course, the highlight will be crowning of the 2013 Pooch Prom King and Queen.
Maybe your dog has special skills. If he can sing, enter him in “The Voice,” a competition for best howling. Maybe he can dance. Enter “Prancing and Dancing with the Stars” for best doggie and human dance.
Organizer Cheryl Crowley expects a huge turnout again this year. “We did it differently last year and we could only have 50 contestants. This time we have more space and the sky’s the limit! We wanted to let more dogs have an opportunity to win a prize.”
Registration includes all pooch activities, contests, a keepsake prom photo, food, water and treats. The event also features live entertainment by Dirty University, celebrity judges and a live auction.
“Of all the events I do, this one is the most fun,” Crowley said. “You’ll laugh the whole day.”
