Arts Garage, Delray Beach
As The Season gets closer, some organizations are starting to provide fall schedules. The Arts Garage in Delray Beach is one of the more unique spaces locally, providing a mix of jazz and theater. Here are some of the musical acts booked ahead, with information from their season preview press release.
OCT. 5: Grand Marquis
A “speakeasy sound” from Kansas City that plays jazz and blues. Finalists in the 2011 International Blues Challenge.
OCT. 12: Jonathan Kreisberg
A guitarist and songwriter, Kreisberg has been on the scene for awhile, and been a member of bands by Lee Konitz, Joe Locke and Dr. Lonnie Smith.
NOV. 29: Billy Stritch
A famous New York cabaret pianist, singer, arranger and composer, Stritch specializes in fresh interpretations of the Great American Songbook.
DEC. 20-22: Dr. Lonnie Smith
Organist and keyboard man extraordinaire, holds every award there is in the jazz organ field.
JAN. 11, 2014: Calvin Newborn/Al Waters Sextet
The Newborn family is as famous in Memphis jazz circles as the Nevilles are in New Orleans. Calvin plays guitar, and grew up watching and learning from everybody from Charles Mingus to B.B. King.
JAN. 25, 2014: Randy Brecker
Trumpet and flugelhorn in jazz circles is ruled by the name Brecker, and Randy is played for everybody from Steely Dan to Bruce Springsteen to Frank Zappa.
FEB. 22, 2014: Dick Hyman
One of the great jazz pianists of all time, he has done it all, from composing to film soundtracks to concerts. He’s also a student and teacher of the form, and has recorded the music of early greats such as Scott Joplin and Jelly Roll Morton.
