For Barb O’Donnell, Teapots and Treasures isn’t just about serving up a cup of tea and a scone.
“We wanted a place for women to come from all walks of life to feel loved and happy,” O’Donnell says. “We have a lot of strangers that walk in and say: ‘Wow, this is where I’m going to come when I don’t feel well and need to be cheered up.’”
For almost 14 years, Teapots and Treasures has been that little haven. It opened in 1990 and originally sold mostly furniture, antique jewelry and desserts. Three years into their endeavor, they started selling lunch.
Shannon Barber, their current baker, chef and server joined O’Donnell six years ago. She’s learned a lot the last few years and makes a ridiculously delicious cranberry orange scone which is served with homemade “treasure butter.”
The most popular item at the café is the chicken salad. “It’s got walnuts, grapes and honey,” O’Donnell says. “That’s what people come here for.”
The cafe, which serves 20 types of hot tea and 11 types of iced tea, also has a luscious cream of tomato soup and an addictive Dreamsicle cake made with oranges, coconut and whipped cream.
It offers a high tea – budget two hours for that endeavor. And almost every weekend, it puts on tea parties, birthday parties, wedding showers and baby showers.
“I just hope that we show love to everyone who walks through here,” O’Donnell says.
Barber agrees – it’s not just about good food but about serving it with love.
“Knowing I made a difference in a life, knowing I made someone happy that day,” she says.
