What’s the best bite at the 3800 Ocean Restaurant and Lounge on Singer Island? That’s a tough one, considering the pedigree of the chefs working in the kitchen. A crew of diverse co-chefs, working under the guidance of executive chef Larry LaValley, deliver consistently delicious bites — even at the lounge.
Case in point: the Nine Bites tasting platter ($36). It’s a sampling of 3800’s treats, served side by side, in nine delectable pops. Think of it as a kind of big Bento box of chefs’ choice bites, one as delicious as the next. For instance, one night you might get lobster fritters, lump crab cake, a short-rib sandwich, a tomato-feta salad, duck prosciutto, grilled shrimp cocktail, butternut squash gnocchi, pan-roasted day-boat scallop, plus a rich lobster bisque.
Which of these is the winning bite? It easily could be the pan-roasted “Ingrid’s” Day Boat Scallops. The little mollusks, brought in daily, are treated with such care that their tenderness translates directly to the palate. They’re accented in a sweet-and-savory cider gastrique that’s reduced to a sumptuous glaze.
For added spice, pair the Nine with 3800’s Jalapeño Cucumber Margarita. Then, sit back and enjoy the stunning oceanfront views just before dusk. Views aside, the dish is an attraction all its own.
