The Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services on Thursday morning confirmed to KTLA that Pitt is under investigation.

The allegations were first reported reported by TMZ. Citing unnamed sources "familiar with the situation," the gossip site said Pitt started acting erratically and screamed at the couple's children as they were on a private jet last Wednesday.

An anonymous report was made to authorities.

TMZ later reported that the case was referred to the FBI, because Pitt's alleged blow-up took place as the plane was in the air, en route from France to the U.S. -- giving federal authorities jurisdiction.

The confrontation happened a day before Jolie and Pitt separated, according to a date provided by Jolie in a divorce filing on Monday. Jolie cited "irreconcilable differences" as the reason for the couple's split.

They have six children together.

According to PEOPLE, Pitt's alleged tirade focused on one of the children, although the magazine did not identify which child it was. Jolie and some of the other children saw the confrontation, PEOPLE reported.

Both PEOPLE and TMZ, citing unnamed sources, said Pitt may have been intoxicated at the time.

According to TMZ, "The plane landed at an airport around 8 p.m., and witnesses say Pitt continued his rant on the tarmac, and even tried leaving in one of the fuel trucks."

Jolie, 41, filed for divorce from Pitt, 52, Monday and requested sole physical custody of the couple's children. They were married in 2014.

"I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well-being of our kids," Pitt said in a statement released on Monday to PEOPLE. "I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time."

In a statement made by her attorney, Jolie said the decision to divorce Pitt "was made for the health of the family."
